At Pomare School in Lower Hutt, recent upgrades have transformed the learning environment, making a noticeable difference for students and staff. New carpet, lighting, and acoustic panels have created a brighter, calmer, and more welcoming space. But the most significant change? The sound - or rather, the lack of it.
One of the biggest improvements has been the reduction in noise. "No more clunking down the hallways—you can feel the difference," says Sherilyn Hall, Principal of Pomare School. The enhancements have made the school feel warm, peaceful, and more conducive to focused learning. The new lighting has also had a big impact, making classrooms feel more open and brighter.
Teachers have noticed a shift in student behaviour, particularly among those with special needs. The softer acoustics have helped them feel more settled, making it easier to stay calm and engaged. Across the school, students are finding it easier to concentrate on their work, showing just how much the physical environment can influence learning. They are also taking better care of their surroundings, with children picking up rubbish unprompted to keep their refreshed spaces looking great.

The upgrade process was made smooth by the team at TorqueIP. Communication was clear and timely, with quick responses to any queries. "The contractors were lovely and went above and beyond to make things work for us," Sherilyn shared. The Board and staff are delighted with the transformation, and while most parents haven’t yet seen the changes in person, those who have are amazed at the difference. Excitement is already building for the next phase of improvements.
From the Ministry of Education’s perspective, investments like these are about more than aesthetics—they're about student well-being and success. "The lift that this project has given all members of the school has been huge. It almost feels like a new school," explains Sherilyn. With students and teachers starting the year feeling more positive and inspired, Pomare School is already seeing the benefits. As more schools undergo similar transformations as part of the Ngā iti Kahurangi (NIK) programme, it’s clear that creating warm, welcoming spaces plays a crucial role in supporting student learning and achievement.
