DAS (distributed antenna systems)

DAS (distributed antenna systems)

A DAS is a network of antennas that send and receive cellular signals on a carrier’s licensed frequencies, thereby improving voice and data connectivity for end users.

DAS is ideal for densely populated indoor spaces such as shopping malls, medical centres and high-rise buildings.

Powerful efficiency

A Distributed Antenna System (DAS) is a network of antennas, connected to a common source, distributed throughout a building or an area to improve mobile telco network performance. The spacing between antennas is such that each antenna gives full coverage without overlapping with other antennas, hence reducing the number of antennas needed to cover the whole building. This network of antennas is also power efficient in comparison to a single, larger antenna covering a wide area.

Distributed antenna systems can be passive or active. A passive DAS grabs cellphone signals from antennas on the roof and runs them through leaky feeder cables throughout the building. In this approach, the signal leakage distributes the signal. In an active system, the signal is passed from roof antennas through fiber cables. Along the way, systems boost and amplify signals as needed. Distributed antenna systems are transparent to mobile devices, providing both voice and data services to mobile devices just like any tower on a cellular network. Densely populated indoor spaces such as shopping malls, medical centers and high-rise buildings are all good candidates for DAS deployments.

Wireless coverage no matter the need

A Distributed Antenna System can be designed for use indoors or outdoors and can be used to provide wireless coverage in hotels, subways, airports, hospitals, businesses, roadway tunnels etc. The wireless services typically provided by a DAS include PCS, cellular, Wi-Fi, police, fire, and emergency services.

Different options for different needs.

There are many types of systems available and the application of the right design will depend on what you are trying to achieve. Different technologies available include;

  • Passive  or "leaky" Coax
  • Active ADC over fiber
  • Hybrid uses both fiber optic
  • Digital RF interface.
